Team up Against Child Abuse Quiz Bowl

The Safe & Sound fundraising committee is pleased to announce that plans are underway for a new fundraising event - the Team Up Against Child Abuse Quiz Bowl!  This exciting new event is scheduled for December 5, 6:30 pm at the Valley Plaza Resort.

There will be a raffle, tasty hors d'oeuvres and some friendly competition through the evening's main entertainment - a Quiz Bowl.  Community members will go head-to-head, testing their knowledge in categories such as Action! (movie trivia, Let's Play Ball! (sports trivia) and A Million Brilliant Possibilities (Midland trivia).

Based on Board consensus, construction on the Pere Marquette Rail Trail, our new name and our new initiatives, we have formally decided to hold off on Magic Ride this year and proceed with this exciting new event.  Bring your game face and help fight child abuse and neglect in Midland County.

Children’s Trust Fund

Michigan’s Children’s Trust Fund (CTF) is a major source of funds for the Safe & Sound Child Advocacy Center. The CTF was organized in 1982 with ongoing funding coming primarily from individual contributions through an income tax check-off program. As originally conceived, a portion of the contributions would be disbursed to local child abuse and neglect councils to support child abuse awareness and prevention, while the rest would go into a trust fund to make the CTF eventually self-sustaining. The check-off program ended in 1999 but was re-instated in 2006.

To accompany the check-off campaign are the sale of Kid Pins and license plates depicting the CTF logo to celebrate children. The unique license plate costs $35, of which $25 goes to the CTF. The license plate can be ordered when you renew your automobile license plate or any time through a Michigan Secretary of State branch office or online at the Secretary of State web site. The plate can also be ordered at the dealership when your purchase a new or used car.

Magic Ride LogoThe original Magic Ride was organized in 1983 by then State Representative Debbie Stabenow (now a U.S. senator) with the support of former MSU and LA Laker basketball star Earvin “Magic” Johnson. It was a major fundraiser for the Michigan Children’s Trust Fund as well as local abuse prevention programs. Until recently, it was held annually in Holt, Michigan.

The “Warm-Up” Magic Ride began in 1987 as a Tri-City bikeathon held at Delta College to benefit area child abuse and neglect prevention groups as a “warm-up” to the statewide Magic Ride in Holt. In 1993 Safe & Sound brought the ride to Midland. Since then it has expanded to include concessions and on-site music and entertainment. In addition to bicyclers, rollerbladers, runners, and walkers have been encouraged to obtain pledges and participate. There is something for almost everyone! With the recent demise of the statewide Magic Ride, the local event is known as the Midland County Magic Ride.

Top pledge-getters are recognized with prizes at the end of the day. Many local business and civic sponsors contribute funding, time, prizes, and other in-kind services to ensure the success of the Midland County Magic Ride.

Magic ride ridersThis event is the primary fund-raiser for  the Safe & Sound Child Advocacy Center. Additionally, it builds community awareness toward the issues of child abuse and neglect and a commitment to work toward prevention. All money raised from the Midland County Magic Ride funds programs in the community.
